There is a lot to choose from in our world today, and this is a result of a beautiful invention called mass reproduction. While it’s convenient to have the resources and variety, it can also be o-ver-whelm-ing. Between what is trending, to what is most affordable, or what is most functional. We are either overwhelmed by a decision to make or the million things we already have because we gave ourselves no limit. I will raise my hand and say that I am just as guilty of wanting to walk out of a store with something in my hand, because I’m convinced something new will make my life better- happier. I’ve come to realize, the opposite is true.
As Dolly Parton once said: “It’s hard to be a diamond in a rhinestone world”, (while I realize this was meant to be a metaphor for true beauty in a woman), I can’t help but be reminded of our literal rhinestone world.
Because things can be made so cheap and easily, and are so affordable as consumers. We can just buy and buy.. (I have especially had this issue with the Target dollar section) and we are able to approach our home-making with the mentality of buying to fill up the space we live in, rather than being forced to only buy the things we absolutely love over a period of time. This has caused us to fall into a trap of clutter, chaos, and even sub par style (example: buying into every new trend).
Because, in design, the white space is what draws the eye to the words or objects, and in music, the silence is what makes the noise move the soul, it is the same in our home. We need the white space to create a clear sense of identity of a place that represents who we are.
So if the solution is having less, then what is worth having? For me, it’s been investing in classic stylish pieces for the everyday things I use. Here are a few things to make a simple space done with care.
1. Woven Laundry Baskets
Whether it’s for the laundry or storing things like blankets or toys, woven or wicker baskets add texture, warmth, and quality to a necessary everyday item.
2. A Pretty Kettle
We all need our coffee, right? And, even if you prefer making other warm drinks, invest in pieces for your every day use that will look nice always sitting out. I love our pour-over kettle. It’s a nice kitchen statement piece.
3. Natural Kitchen Brushes
Rather than settling for the plastic kitchen scrubbies that you want to hide and tend to wear out quickly, find classic wooden ones that you want to use, and take care of. Why not opt for a wooden dish rack while you’re at it? Anything to make the practical also inspiring.
4. Plants & Fresh Stems
Having oxygen-giving life around you is not only good for your health, but you might just find yourself in a mutual relationship. Of course they need you (to give them a little water and sunshine), but you might just love being needed and watching the care pay off. Also find some of the positive benefits of having fresh flowers around on Darling Magazine.
5. Glass Jar Pantry Storage
Organization done pretty. Why not make every possible spot in your home nice on the eyes? Let the mundane, functional spark happiness. What is better than clear glass jars labeled with a paint pen (as seen above) for simple pantry organization. Quality living goes beyond what is seen, but what is hidden in the cabinets and how it is organized for your lifestyle.
Investing in a quality candle you really love not only makes for a better experience, but will make you appreciate it even more. And, if you’re sacrificing more lower-end candles for just one that you adore, you can appreciate less stuff to overwhelm your home (But, really, your mind). When it’s done, recycle it’s container as a planter for a new house plant. Not only will it will carry meaning as it was something you loved and valued, but it’s quality container will live on and add charm to your home. P.F. Candle Co. is a classic choice, and a favorite.
Whether knits are handmade or store bought- they are just cozy. They inspire detail, patience, and care- as those are just the things needed to make them. The added texture creates dynamic in your space, becoming more than a blanket, but a functional statement piece.
8. Classic Lamp
A classic lamp goes a long way. Somewhere between simple, but with that special sense of charm to it, this lamp will live timelessly in your space, while always giving a little personality. The one above demonstrates well. Investing in a nice lamp- or a couple- will definitely add a cozy, quality feel to a space.
9. Bathtub Luxuries
Who needs their bathtub to look like this? Well, no one needs it. But, in our fast paced world, we need to invite ourself to rest a little more. Inspiring that can look like adding luxuries to a place like your tub. That’s where a simple wooden board can go a long way for some bath time with a book or a candle. And for the everyday, add a hanging plant to your rod, or plants inside your shower. Not only will they appreciate the steam, but you will appreciate seeing them on a daily basis. We all know we need some positive energy and life in the morning as we wake up and prepare for the day.
All of these things can be overlooked. Either they can be lived without or they can be done cheap, and without care. But, even if you don’t have a lot, I find these pieces to make quite a difference- inspiring a lifestyle of quality and care in the place you call home.
Whether home is a place you spend a lot of time in, or seek to find deep rest from your work in, this safe place matters. While the little things are what make up the big thing, you don’t need a lot of them- only a few things done well.
